Outreach Youth Work
Outreach youth work reaches out to young people. The foundation work is walking the streets and blocks 4 evenings a week and meeting the young people in their space. The initial aim is to create relations of trust especially with those who are most marginalised from the benefits of mainstream society. The Outreach Team offers professional friendship, advice, information and support in connecting with services, resources and constructive activity.
The Team has 4 full-time and one half-time Outreach Youth Workers. They are supervised by a Senior Youth Worker and have the support of many volunteers and sessional workers.
Street-based youth work and referrals are the core work. Since 1999, the street work has built excellent recognition and trust levels. During 2007-08 just over 500 supported and backed-up referrals were made by the Team. Click here for a sample list of referrals.
Core street work is complemented by street art, street games, street education and Open Friday, (when the Team invites over-15s to The Reco).
Outfit is a special Outreach project for about 20 17-21 year-olds who have a year of intensive mentoring and support.
Not all young people will conveniently arrive at our door, so we believe in going to the young people in their areas and pro-actively encouraging them to get involved in what we offer.
